Patents give an inventor exclusive rights to exploit their invention, for a limited time (generally 20 years).

Nice examples of new inventions are for instance the paperclip and the post-it note. They are physical products with specific new properties.

Software Patents are a whole other kettle of fish. It is important to note that those who oppose Software Patents specifically are not against regular Patents or Intellectual Property in general.
